Research report: Less than 1% of smartphones sold in the U.S. last year had 5G

[TechWeb]news on March 16, according to foreign media reports, 5G with faster speed and lower latency has been commercialized in some countries last year. Many smartphone manufacturers have launched a variety of 5G smartphones, but due to 5G The commercial use has not started long, and the current proportion of 5G smartphones is still relatively low.

The research report shows that the United States, one of the first countries to start 5G commercialization, currently accounts for a very low proportion of 5G smartphones. Among the smartphones sold last year, 5G accounted for less than 1%.

Analyst firm NPD, which researched 5G smartphones in the U.S. market, said in a new Mobile Connectivity report that 5G accounted for less than 1 percent of smartphones sold in the U.S. last year.

5G smartphones accounted for less than 1 percent of the U.S. last year, largely due to the small number of 5G smartphones, slightly higher prices and limited 5G network coverage.

In terms of the number of 5G smartphones, NPD said in the report that before Apple launched the 5G iPhone, the 5G smartphones in the U.S. market came from the Android camp, and fewer than 15 models were sold in the U.S. last year. Consumers options are still very limited.

In terms of price, like other markets, last year’s support for 5G connectivity was mainly high-end models. The first 5G smartphones in the U.S. market were the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, which started at about $999. The US smartphone market is currently dominated by Apple and Samsung, with 90% of the smartphones sold in December last year coming from Apple and Samsung.

In terms of the coverage of 5G networks, 5G only started commercial use last year, and the current coverage of 5G networks is still relatively limited, as is the case in the United States.

Although 5G accounted for less than 1% of smartphones sold in the U.S. last year, less than 1% is still a lot of progress due to the fact that it has not been commercialized for a long time. NPD mentioned in the report that with the launch of 5G smartphones by manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and OnePlus, 5G smartphones have grown significantly in the US market. From the first half of the year to the second half of the year, the number of 5G devices has increased by nearly 9 times.

In addition, U.S. consumers are currently becoming more aware of 5G. NPD mentioned in the report that 89% of consumers surveyed said they were aware of 5G, an increase of 16% from 73% in the first half of last year. 65% of people said they are interested in buying a 5G smartphone, and only 15% of consumers said they were not interested.

With the increase of 5G smartphones and the expansion of 5G network coverage, the sales of 5G smartphones will also increase significantly. NPD mentioned in the report that there may be a significant increase in the next 18 months.
