SmartMX2 Microcontrollers for Safety and Multiple Applications

NXP Semiconductors NV has introduced its latest SmartMX2 microcontroller, based on the breakthrough IntegralSecurity architecture. SmartMX2 not only provides unprecedented multi-application security performance, but also does not affect the convenience, overall performance and design efficiency of the product. The flexibility and scalability of the SmartMX2 is suitable for a wide range of applications such as e-government, financial settlement, pay TV, mobile transactions, public transportation, access control and device authentication.

A major trend in identification today is the use of a single secure smart card and Near Field Communication (NFC) handsets to support multiple applications. For example, the new German citizen ID card can be used in place of a passport when travelling in Europe, while facilitating secure online transactions. Another example is the Taiwan EasyCard, which integrates multiple functions such as bus ticketing, micro-payment, performance ticketing and student ID cards. In addition, NFC mobile phones will provide consumers with a series of convenient and secure applications.

Uncompromising security multi-application

NXP’s SmartMX2 microcontroller products use the new IntegralSecurity architecture, which is designed to provide integrity and privacy protection for user data and applications, and meets the certification requirements of CC EAL 6+. Based on more than 100 dedicated security mechanisms, IntegralSecurity can create dense protection shields such as redundancy and multiple layers, and is a unique security design. The hardened Fame2 cryptographic protocol processor has excellent power, can provide more DPA resiliency, supports all RSA/ECC encryption algorithms, and flexible RSA key length up to 4,096 bits. SmartMX2 microcontrollers feature NXP’s patented SecureFetch feature that protects data from light and laser attacks, in addition to protecting software code, but also features NXP’s patented GlueLogic feature that provides advanced protection against reverse engineering attacks. In addition, the SmartMX2 microcontroller features a redesigned memory management unit (MMU) with superior firewall capabilities for multi-application setups. The product is manufactured with advanced 0.09-micron CMOS technology, with a total of 7 metal layers, which further enhances the protection capability against reverse engineering and probe attacks, creating an active and dynamic multi-threaded shielding protection net.

The new SmartMX2 microcontrollers provide customers with industry-leading performance and transaction processing times. According to Dhrystone measurements, the CPU and encryption performance of SmartMX2 is 5.7 times higher than the peak performance of previous generation SmartMX products, both on contact and contactless interfaces, and consumes less power. This unique product family offers the flexibility to choose ROM, RAM, EEPROM and FLASH memory without changing the architecture and interface. SmartMX2 microcontrollers fully support NXP’s MIFARE technologies – including MIFARE DESFire, Plus CPU and MIFARE Classic, which are now commonly used in access control and contactless transportation deployments in 650 cities in more than 60 countries around the world.
