Editor’s note:

This is the era of 5G.

In the past year, 5G information rivers have converged, enterprises have risen to peaks, and the intelligent world has become extremely open. It is not only the soil in the information revolution, but also an important cornerstone for consolidating the status of scientific and technological innovation.

In the past year, the 5G market has been competing with each other:

On the international track, major giants compete for the commanding heights in many fields;

Patent research and development, the global share of the Chinese camp has exceeded 50%;

Smart innovation, continuous business opportunities in application scenarios and successively put into production;

In the mobile phone market, the segmented competition in the 100-yuan range is particularly fierce;

In the past year, the “5G Everyone Talks” column jointly launched by Sina Technology and Sina 5G has chatted with dozens of famous people from government, business and academia about the development and implementation of communications, and answered questions for readers. At the same time, the “5G Big Steps” column will explore the growth path of Chinese communication companies for readers; “5G Lecture Hall” will share the 5G industry applications and future trends in the form of live broadcasts.

Today, one year later, information is integrated into all industries. When more people touch 5G, what kind of sparks will they collide?

Yesterday, in the live broadcast of “Smart 5G, Creating the Future” hosted by Sina Technology and Sina 5G, Qin Fei, Dean of the Vivo Communication Research Institute, shared the theme of “Smart Terminals Helping the Development of the 5G Industry”.

Qin Fei shared the impact of the new crown epidemic on China’s 5G industry and how to better develop the 5G industry and applications in the future. He believes that the epidemic has not slowed down the development of China’s 5G network and 5G mobile phones, but has accelerated. In terms of the next 5G application exploration, he suggested that 5G messages for individuals should clarify the billing model as soon as possible, preferably charging by traffic; while for industry applications, verification and running-in are still required, and no great leap forward.

The epidemic has not slowed down the development of 5G, but has accelerated the development of 5G networks and 5G mobile phones

The outbreak of the new crown epidemic at the beginning of this year has had a certain impact on many industries in China. Will the epidemic slow down the development of China’s 5G industry? The answer given by Qin Fei is that in the long run, not only does it not slow down, but it accelerates further.

Taking 5G network construction as an example, the government has proposed a new infrastructure policy to stimulate the economy by increasing infrastructure investment. The construction of 5G network is a key direction of the new infrastructure. At present, the three major operators have completed the bidding of all wireless equipment, network equipment and core network equipment this year, and more than 500,000 new stations will be built. In addition to those already built last year, there will be more than 700,000 stations in China by the end of this year, covering all first- and second-tier cities, including all prefecture-level cities, and will have 5G coverage.

In terms of 5G mobile phones, the epidemic had a certain impact on sales in February, but it recovered quickly in March and surpassed the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2020, domestic 5G mobile phone sales reached 14 million-15 million units, and the sales volume in one quarter has far exceeded the sales volume in the whole of last year. According to the April sales of smartphones released by the Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the proportion of 5G mobile phones has reached 39%, close to 40%.

vivo has also successively launched a number of 5G mobile phones covering various price ranges this year. He predicted that with the drop in the price of 5G mobile phones, the sales ratio of domestic 5G mobile phones will exceed 50% by the end of this year. Based on the total sales volume of 300-400 million units predicted by most agencies, the domestic sales of 5G mobile phones will be close to 200 million units this year.

In addition, Qin Fei believes that the epidemic has also spawned many 5G applications, such as 5G robots delivering protective materials in hospitals to achieve no contact; 5G drones promote prevention and control policies, so that everyone should try not to gather; some companies quickly launched AR The infrared recognition temperature measurement of glasses and AR glasses is more convenient than using a thermometer to measure temperature.

“On the whole, the epidemic will have no impact on the long-term development of 5G in our country, but it will further accelerate.”

However, Qin Fei believes that compared with the popularization of 5G mobile phones, the progress of domestic 5G network construction still needs to be accelerated. At present, the total number of 4G base stations in China is about 5 million, but the number of 5G base stations is relatively small. At the same time, the SA function of the 5G network is being tested and is expected to be opened in the fourth quarter of this year.

He pointed out that the 5G core network still needs to do a lot of testing, and 5G involves some new services, including AR/VR, VoNR voice services, 5G messaging, 5G network slicing and other new technologies and new services that need to be continuously improved. He suggested that the government should provide more support to operators at the policy level to build 5G networks faster and better.

5G messages need to clarify the billing model, industry applications cannot make a big leap forward

While building the network, the three major operators are also accelerating the exploration of applications. Earlier, the three companies jointly announced that they will launch 5G news, and vivo is also involved.

Qin Fei said that 5G messages are firstly an upgrade of existing text messages, from simple text to richer content; secondly, users’ mobile phone address book may be similar to WeChat address book and Moments, and operators of different platforms can also Communication; finally, 5G is not only the communication between people, but also the communication between people and things, people and enterprises. “Everyone will misunderstand and think that it may become a bunch of promotional text messages. In fact, it is not, it has many ways to play. You can send a text message to your refrigerator and air conditioner, or send a voice message to your air conditioner. After that, perform these operations accordingly, no need to install the app again.”

At present, vivo is also developing an intelligent short message platform, integrating chat functions, IoT functions, membership platform functions, and content service functions into the intelligent short message platform. In terms of the specific commercial timetable, the support of SA network is also required. vivo’s 5G messaging function is expected to be officially launched in the fourth quarter of this year when SA is commercialized.

Qin Fei also emphasized that although there is a lot of room for imagination in 5G news, the billing model has not yet been clarified. He suggested that operators should better charge by traffic. “If it is changed to 0.15 yuan, it may be difficult to develop.”

In addition to 5G news for personal scenarios, operators and the entire industry are also vigorously exploring the application scenarios of 5G in various industries. However, Qin Fei made a suggestion: not to make a great leap forward.

He pointed out that, on the one hand, scenarios such as smart factories, Internet of Vehicles, and telemedicine have high requirements for latency and reliability. Once accidents are excluded, the cost is very high. 5G networks also need to be verified and optimized for individual user applications; on the other hand, there are still some gaps between various industries and 5G, and it will take a certain amount of time for people with different educational backgrounds to accept 5G. Only after the two sides run in, find the real pain points and growth points, and prove that there is no problem, can the industry application be accelerated.

“If you find that 5G will improve your business in a qualitative way, congratulations, you can quickly integrate 5G into it. If you don’t find it, there is no need to use 5G for 5G, but 5G must be added.” Qin Fei finally said.
